Discover the Beauty of Ceiba
Ceiba was founded on April 7, 1838. The town of Ceiba borderers the Atlantic Ocean on the east coast, north of Naguabo, south of Fajardo and east of Río Grande, Puerto Rico. Ceiba has some stunning rivers to visit, so be sure to take time to explore them. Some of the more popular ones are Daguao, Fajardo and Demajaguas.
The people of Ceiba are commonly known as “Los Come Sopa” (Soup Eaters). It is believed that in the past the town did not have a meat market and villagers had to walk long distances to buy meat. As a result they mostly ate soup.
Ceiba is known for its beautiful environment and surroundings. One of the many attractions in Ceiba is the forest running along the coastline between Fajardo and Ceiba. Hiking this stretch of forest at night is a very popular activity. It is estimated that approximately 95% of the forest is mangrove swamp. You will be able to see many species of birds, so bring your binoculars if you plan to visit the forest. You will also catch sight of turtles and manatees. There are so many beautiful things to see and experience in Ceiba that visitors simply have to come here and enjoy the great outdoors. You may even choose to do so by backpacking through the area.
As in most towns of Puerto Rico, Ceiba was founded on the Christian religion of the Catholic Church that prevailed in previous centuries through Spanish tradition. However, today the town of Ceiba is mostly made up of Protestant Christians with almost a 100 small churches scattered around the town. These ancient buildings are something to see.
Ceiba is situated near Fajardo, which used to be home to an American military air base, and the Roosevelt Roads Naval Station. To increase the number of international airlines that operate into Puerto Rico, it was suggested that the property be turned into a major international airport which could serve as a relief to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan. However this was met with skepticism by environmentalists, economists and others and the decision regarding what should be done with Ceiba’s old air base is still being debated. Ceiba is about one hour’s drive from San Juan’s International airport. So come experience this wonderful destination for yourself.
