Reefs, Caves and Seawalls Attract Divers and Swimmers

Scuba diving in Puerto Rico is not only the most fun you will have in your lifetime, but is also a most rewarding activity. The water that surrounds the island is a treasure trove of coral reefs, breathtaking schools of vibrantly colored fish, crabs and something which is very rarely seen, delicate seahorses. The tropical setting and warm waters make Puerto Rico a diver’s paradise. This fact was confirmed in 2006 when Puerto Rico was nominated as one of the top five diving destinations in the Scuba Diving Magazine's "Readers' Choice Awards". In addition, it has been named one of the Top 20 diving destinations in the world. It is no wonder that so many scuba divers come here to enjoy this activity in Puerto Rico.

The mystical underwater wonders around Puerto Rico feature sea walls, caves and reefs that scuba divers can investigate. Each diving site in Puerto Rico has its own lure and marine life, and may feature creatures such as parrotfish, octopus and sergeant majors. It all depends on what you are looking forward to seeing while investigating the tranquil ocean bed.

Diving straight off the beach in San Juan, in the Condado District, will have you entering the world of lava reefs that provide protection and hiding places for a large variety of marine life. The reefs are overrun with copper sweepers and snappers and many fish such as bluehead wrasse, French angels and batfish frequent these waters, together with sea horses, coral shrimp and arrow crabs.

Some of the more popular reefs are located on the west coast and have crystal clear waters surrounding them. This part of the island is also home to the Desecheo Island. This island always attracts a lot of diving activity as it accommodates various levels of diving experience. Even visitors who are not comfortable with scuba diving can snorkel around the island and still be able to see the beautiful marine animals and fish that live here.

Another diving site in Puerto Rico that is recommended is Mona Island. The island can only be reached by boat, but the marine extravaganza that awaits you is worth the trip. Dolphins, sharks, whales, manta rays, sea turtles, eagle rays, lobsters, eels and a massive amount of tropical fish live in these waters and it is almost guaranteed that divers will see a different fish or animal on each dive. Other diving sites to visit include the southern coast of Puerto Rico, Fajardo and the Humacao Region. Scuba diving is not only a popular activity in Puerto Rico, but an experience that will be etched in your heart forever.
