Parque de las Ciencias Luis A. Ferre

The educational and recreational park, Parque de las Ciencias Luis A. Ferre (Luis A. Ferre Science Park), located in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, is a great place for a family outing. Focusing primarily on science-related subjects, the park has numerous activities to keep everyone entertained for the day.

The Luis A. Ferre Science Park features a natural observation point that is set on a hill at 285 feet above sea level. The view of Bayamon city and its surroundings from this observation point is breath-taking. The planetarium is both entertaining and educational, and visitors can enjoy an enthralling presentation on the solar system, which is projected onto the ceiling. Children have the opportunity to experience the excitement of the flight simulator in the Rocket Plaza. The Aerospace Museum chronicles more than twenty years of space exploration and highlights the great strides that mankind has made in this fascinating field. Impressive life-sized models of NASA rockets and spacecraft are on display.

The Transportation Museum, which is incorporated into the Parque de las Ciencias Luis A. Ferre, has a number of interesting displays, including a collection of antique cars and the island’s oldest bicycle. There is also a Science and Physics Museum that pays tribute to the pioneers in science and details how science and physics play an integral role in our everyday lives, without us even realizing it. The Electrical Energy Museum also gives visitors insight into the practicalities of electricity and alternative methods for generating power.

The Parque de las Ciencias Luis A. Ferre has a small zoo and an artificial lake which are very popular with visitors. Visitors can rent a boat to take out on to the lake. The park also includes beautifully landscaped areas that have been dedicated to child entertainer Joaquin Monserrat, fondly known as “Pacheco” and late comedian Jose Miguel Agrelot. The park itself is named in honor of Luis A. Ferre, the former Governor of Puerto Rico.

In February 2008, an art gallery was opened in the Parque de las Ciencias. Artworks by local masters are displayed, including Augusto Marin, Alfonso Arana, Epifanio Irizarry, Carmelo Sobrino, Oscar Colon Delgado, Rafael Tufino, and Arnaldo Maas. Also on display are works by European masters such as Dali, Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Moore, Calder and Rembrandt.

For a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, or a change in scenery from the beautiful beaches of Puerto Rico, Parque de Las Ciencias Luis A. Ferre offers a superb blend of education and entertainment for the whole family.
