Facts About Puerto Rico Culture

Land Area
The island of Puerto Rico is approximately 13.790 square kilometers in size. This includes 4.921 square kilometers of water which can be found in various forms inland. The actual land area of the island is 8.870 square kilometers. Puerto Rico is almost the same size as three Rhode Islands combined.

Climate
Puerto Rico features both low lying and mountainous regions with slight differences in temperature between the two. The mountainous regions are normally a few degrees cooler than the coastal areas. Generally speaking the climate is classified as being ‘tropical marine’. Temperatures are mild and there is very little seasonal temperature variation.

Natural Resources and Hazards
Though Puerto Rico is not that large, it does have some natural resources which are regularly exploited. These are mainly copper and nickel reserves which are found in the more mountainous regions of the country. There is also a lot of potential for harvesting onshore and offshore oil reserves. The worst natural hazards that the island may face is periodic hurricanes though these seldom occur. Droughts may also affect Puerto Rico from time to time.

As per July of 2007, there were 3,944,259 people living in Puerto Rico.

Religion
Roman Catholicism is by far the most widely practiced religion in Puerto Rico with some 85% of the island’s inhabitants claiming to be adherents. Protestantism is the second largest religion and many other religions are also practiced freely on the island.

Flag
Puerto Rico’s flag features five equal horizontal bands of red and white with red making up the top, bottom and middle stripe. A blue triangle with equal sides is situated on the hoist side and this features a large, white, five-pointed star in the middle of it.

Agricultural Products and Main Industries
Though small, plenty of the island is dedicated to the farming of certain agricultural products. The main products farms are sugarcane, coffee, pineapples, plantains and bananas. Livestock and chickens are also widely farmed. The main industries in Puerto Rico include pharmaceuticals, apparel, food products, electronics and tourism.

Electronic and Telecommunications Services
Puerto Rico has a well developed infrastructure with approximately 24.14 billion kWh being produced annually. There are some 1,038 million people who have telephone lines installed on their property while a rapidly increasing number of Puerto Ricans are making use of cellular phones. Internet usage is also fairly high with approximately 915,600 people making use of the internet. There are also three radio stations and 32 television stations operating on the island.
